On 30 January 2017 Nadeem Muhammed, attempts to board a Ryanair flight (Boeing 737) from Manchester Airport to Bergamo, Italy. Security at Manchester Airport found an IED in the zip lining of Nadeem Muhammed’s suitcase. When question he stated it was placed in his suitcase by another party.
The IED was swabbed by security at the airport, no detection or traces of explosives was found. Thus security did not think it was a viable threat. The IED itself contained: batteries, tape, a marker pen, pins and wires.
This should have been an immediate red flag, but Nadeem Muhammed was questioned released and allowed to board another plane two days later.
On 8 February 2017 the device is examined and experts confirm it is a legitimate IED. Following on 12 February 2017 on arrival in the UK, Nadeem Muhammed is arrested, and charged with possessing an improvised explosive device under the Explosive Substances Act of 1883.
